What is Forest Bathing?

Forest Bathing is an evidence-based, therapeutic practice that connects people to the natural world through gentle, sensory-based activities. It originated in Japan where it is known Shinrin Yoku which roughly translates as taking in the forest with all your senses.

The practice involves walking slowly, breathing deeply, and using your senses to connect with the natural world.

Benefits of Forest Bathing

According to studies done in Japan, the US, the U.K. and other countries there are numerous scientifically proven benefits to forest bathing:

  • Reduced stress levels: Spending time in nature has a calming effect on the mind and body, which can help reduce stress levels.
  • Improved mood: Studies have shown that spending time in nature can improve mood and cognitive function.
  • Boosted immune system: Trees and plants release chemicals called phytoncides, which have been shown to boost the immune system.
  • Lowered blood pressure: Spending time in nature has been shown to lower blood pressure, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Where to Practice Forest Bathing

You might think of a big lush forest as the perfect destination but forest bathing can be practised anywhere, indoors, in a local park, or in your garden. It is a slow, mindful and gentle activity that is accessible to everyone. With the help of an experienced guide the invitations or nature connection activities can be adapted to almost any environment and situation.

The practise of forest bathing works equally as well in green spaces such as down by the river, a lake or ocean.
